Pre-Purchase Marine Survey: What Buyers Must Know
How to hire an independent surveyor, what haul-out and sea trial reveal, and how to turn findings into negotiation or a clean walk-away.
A survey is a qualified inspector's written opinion, not a warranty. It's still the best few hundred dollars you'll spend buying a used boat, and the cheapest way to find out about soft decks before they're yours.
Hire independence
Pay the surveyor yourself. Prefer credentials (e.g., SAMS, NAMS) and type experience (sail, power, fiberglass moisture, wood, aluminum). Ask for a sample report.
Scope
- Hull structure, deck core, bulkheads
- Systems: fuel, electrical, plumbing, sanitation
- Machinery visual + recommendations for specialists
- Safety equipment status
- Sea trial observations
- Bottom inspection on the hard when indicated
Oil analysis & compression
For many inboards/sterndrives, oil analysis is cheap insight. Compression/leakdown via a mechanic may be separate from the surveyor’s scope—clarify.
Using the report
Triage: unsafe / structural, soon-required, monitor, cosmetic. Negotiate repairs, price credit, or exit per contract deadlines.
FAQs
Who pays for haul-out? Negotiable; often buyer pays for inspection haul on used boats—confirm in offer.
Will the insurer accept any survey? Insurers may require their own criteria or recent survey for older boats.
Can a surveyor “pass” a boat? They report condition; “pass/fail” is your decision with advisors.
