Boat Day™ · Cast off with confidence

Calm prep — then cast off

Know you're ready, then go. A quick check before you leave so the day feels like why you bought the boat: a sober skipper, an honest go or stay in, and gear within reach. Serious, not scary.

Cast-off confidence

Ready feels better than anxious

Gear, skills, and honest go / stay-in keep good days good — including cold water and short seasons. Checklists are there to get you out, not to ruin the morning. Start with Go Today, then the pre-departure list when you want depth.

Our stance

Boat Day’s north star is Quality Boat Days — more days that feel like why you bought the boat. Safety is how those days stay good. It is not a scare campaign and not a punch line. Calm preparation, sober skippering, and the right gear protect the people you care about and the freedom you came for.

We take safety seriously because a Quality Boat Day is only quality when everyone comes home.

What this hub is — and is not

Boat Day safety content is advisory education for U.S. recreational boaters. It is not:

  • A substitute for the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules, federal carriage requirements, or current CFR text
  • A substitute for state law, local ordinances, or marina rules
  • Professional training, a captain’s license course, or hands-on instruction
  • Legal, insurance, or survey advice

Verify locally. Education cards, child PFD ages, carriage extras, and BUI rules vary by state and sometimes by waterway. Start at /states and confirm with your state boating agency and official .gov sources before you cast off in unfamiliar waters.

How we write about safety

  • Calm and competent — never scare-mongering, never flippant
  • Prefer conservative go / no-go when conditions are marginal — including cold water and short-season daylight
  • Point to official education and gear standards rather than inventing numbers
  • Tie habits back to Quality Boat Days: prep clears burden; gear and skills raise worth-it

Official starting points

  • U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety — federal recreational safety education and carriage themes
  • NASBLA — state education standards and course finder context
  • Boat Day state guides — registration, title, tax, and education pointers by jurisdiction

If you spot an error or outdated safety claim on Boat Day, please report a safety content issue.

Six pillars

How good days stay good

Prep

Float plan, vessel check, fuel and weather brief before the dock lines leave the cleat.

Gear

PFDs that fit, extinguishers, flares, throwable, VHF — and knowing where each lives.

Skills

Education cards where required, sober skippering, and practiced emergency drills.

Weather

Honest go / no-go against marine forecasts, lightning, cold water, and your boat’s limits — especially on a short season.

Crew

Guest briefing, kid PFDs, swim rules, and a named sober operator.

Emergency readiness

Fire, CO, man overboard, grounding — and how to call for help clearly.

Quick checks

A calm mental pass so you cast off sure — then the full checklist when you want depth.

PFDs for everyone

Jackets that fit — kids sized right before lines leave the cleat.

Sober skipper

Name who runs the boat. Laws apply on the water; check your state.

Weather honesty

Lightning, wind, fog, or cold water looking thin for this boat and crew? Stay in — especially on a short season.

Float plan ashore

Who, where, when back — then close the plan when you return.

Know how to call

VHF 16 basics and 911 near shore — position and headcount ready.

Extinguisher & throwable

Charged, in date, within reach — not buried under dock lines.

Short season, cold water, honest calls

On the Piscataqua and Gulf of Maine, the water stays cold longer than the air feels warm. Pair Go Today with local judgment — ready, then cast off. Find them online (their sites · ≠ founding); yards that want a founding seat start at join. When the season turns, winterize is a separate calm pass.

Education & cards

State operator cards and NASBLA-approved courses vary by jurisdiction. We never invent fees or reciprocity — use Boat Day state guides, then confirm on official sites.

Know before you need it

Fire, CO, man overboard, grounding — and how to call on VHF 16 or 911 near shore. Read once on a quiet evening; practice roles on a calm day. Prep, not panic.

Trust & limits

  • Boat Day safety pages are advisory — not a substitute for official regulations, professional training, or local law.
  • Prefer USCG Boating Safety (.gov) and your state agency for carriage and education mandates.
  • Rules vary — start at /states and verify locally before you cast off somewhere new.

Courses that teach, not scare

BoatUS Foundation, America's Boating Course, Sea Tow Foundation, NASBLA portals — complement this hub. Safety is never joked about; apps do not replace local carriage rules.
