Safety-First Principles for Quality Boat Days
Culture, prep, sober skippering, and a float plan — the habits that keep good days good.
Safety is a boat day multiplier. The goal is not fear; it is competence so the day feels like why you bought the boat.
Culture aboard
- Name a sober skipper before drinks come aboard. In the U.S., boating under the influence is illegal on navigable waters; many states set specific BUI thresholds and penalties — verify locally.
- Brief everyone before leaving the dock: life jacket locations, kill-switch / engine stop, where not to step, and who calls for help if the skipper is busy.
- Slow is smooth when docking, fueling, and boarding. Rushing is where most dock injuries start.
Prep before cast-off
- Check weather and your own go / no-go rules — see Weather and go / no-go and Go Today.
- Walk the pre-departure safety checklist.
- Confirm fuel, oil, bilge, navigation lights, and that seacocks / drain plugs match your launch plan.
- File a float plan with someone ashore: who is aboard, where you intend to go, when you expect to return, and how to reach you. Update or close the plan when you are back.
Sober skippering
Alcohol and recreational drugs impair judgment, balance, night vision, and reaction time — the same skills docking and collision avoidance demand. Assign the operator role clearly. Guests can enjoy the day without the person at the helm sharing that glass.
Float plan essentials
Share with a reliable person ashore:
- Vessel name, description, registration / HIN if useful
- Departure point and intended route or destination
- Number of people aboard (and PFD count)
- Expected return time and a “call me if overdue” contact
- Radio / phone plan
If plans change, tell them. When you return, close the plan so no one triggers an unnecessary search.
FAQs
Is a float plan only for offshore trips? No — day trips on lakes and bays benefit too, especially with kids or unfamiliar waters.
Do I need a captain’s license for recreational use? Most private recreational operation does not require a USCG master license, but state education cards often do — see Boating education and cards and /states.
Advisory only. Confirm federal carriage rules, state law, and local conditions before you go.
