Know enough to cast off

Kids, Crew, and Guests

Guest briefing, child PFDs, swim rules, and keeping non-skippers safe without killing the joy.

People who don't live on your boat need a short, calm briefing. Everyone relaxes faster once they know the rules.

Before leaving the dock

Brief everyone in plain language:

  1. Where life jackets are and when they must be worn
  2. Who the sober operator is
  3. Engine kill-switch / how the boat stops
  4. Where to sit underway; where not to ride (bow riding, gunwales, swim platform underway — follow law and common sense)
  5. Man-overboard: point, shout, throw flotation, do not jump in unless trained and it is safe
  6. Head / seacock basics if guests might use the marine toilet
  7. Swim rules for the day (see below)

Kids and PFDs

  • Child PFD fit is non-negotiable: snug, correct size, crotch strap used if the jacket has one.
  • Many states require children under a stated age to wear a PFD while underway — ages and exceptions vary. Check /states and your state boating agency; do not assume a neighbor state’s rule.
  • Assign an adult “buddy” for each young child in a crowd.

Swim rules

Agree before anyone enters the water:

  • Engine off, keys controlled, prop area clear before swimming
  • Ladder ready; weak swimmers wear PFDs in the water when conditions warrant
  • Lookout remains aboard
  • No diving in unknown depth or toward the boat
  • Account for current, boat traffic, and cold water

Guests who are new to boats

Assume zero shared vocabulary. Show the throwable, the fire extinguisher, and how to use the VHF or phone to call for help if you are incapacitated. Keep the tone steady — competence invites questions; jokes about drowning do not.

Alcohol and crew

The operator stays sober. Guests who drink still need clear boarding and swim boundaries. Overcrowding and blocked walkways cause falls — keep decks clear.

FAQs

Can inflatable PFDs be used for kids? Usually no — check the approval label; most child requirements specify wearable foam jackets of the correct size.
How long should a guest brief take? Two to five calm minutes beats an hour of confusion underway.

Advisory only. Child PFD and education rules vary by state — verify locally.
