Registration, Title, and Taxes (US State Variance Guide)
How US vessel registration and titling generally work, when USCG documentation applies, and why sales/use tax and trailer titles must be checked per state.
Rules vary by state. This guide is a national framework—not legal advice.
Typical state registration
Most states require registration for motorized recreational vessels. You receive a certificate and decals; numbers must be displayed per state specs. Renewal is often annual or biennial.
Titling
Many states title boats above a certain length or when they change hands. The title shows who's owned her and whether anyone still has a lien on her. Never buy without a clear title path.
USCG documentation
Eligible larger vessels may be federally documented. Documentation is prized by lenders and for some offshore uses. State registration/numbering requirements often still apply for operating in state waters—verify locally.
Sales and use tax
- Dealer sales: usually collected at sale
- Private sales: buyer may owe use tax when registering—state-specific
- Out-of-state purchases brought home: use tax risk is real
Trailers
Often titled/registered as vehicles through DMV—separate from the boat. Lights, brakes, and safety chains are enforced on the road.
Practical checklist
- Identify vessel agency for your state
- Confirm title + registration rules for LOA/type
- Decide documentation vs state title with lender input
- Clear liens; verify HIN on boat matches papers
- Budget tax and fees before “out-the-door” celebrations
- Display numbers correctly; keep certificate aboard
FAQs
What if the seller lost the title? Start a replacement/bonded title process before you fund—timelines can be long.
Do I register in the state I boat or the state I live? Generally domicile/registration rules apply; snowbirds should get professional tax/registration advice.
