Preventive Maintenance Schedule for Recreational Boats
A maintenance rhythm for engines, zincs, seacocks, batteries, trailers, and lay-up. Fewer tows home, better resale.
Every outing
Visual bilge check, float switch test bump, navigation lights if night, tire pressures if trailering, kill-switch lanyard present, fuel sufficient + reserve.
Every 50–100 hours / annually (adjust to OEM)
Engine oil/filter (4-stroke), gearcase oil, fuel filters/water separators, belts, impellers per interval or sooner in sediment-heavy waters, grease points.
Annual
Anodes, battery load test, fire extinguisher inspection, hose/clamp survey, seacock exercise & service, safety gear expiry check, trailer bearings/brakes/lights.
Multi-year
Bottom paint as needed, bellows/gimbal on sterndrives, heat exchangers/manifolds on inboards (especially saltwater), upholstery UV care, electronics backups.
Logbook discipline
Hours + date + part numbers + yard invoices. Future you (and future buyers) will pay you back.
FAQs
Can I DIY impeller changes? Many outboard owners do; confirm model procedure and carry a spare on longer trips if skilled.
Freshwater vs salt intervals? Salt generally shortens corrosion-related intervals—rinse and anode vigilance matter.
